Peace Arch protest

Posted June 29th

About 30 B.C. customs offers took their fight with the federal government over pay and classification issues to the border June 26, in a successful protest at the Peace Arch crossing south of Vancouver.

The good-natured event caused some delays for travelers for about an hour, and generated a lot of media coverage.

The dispute between members of PSAC’s CEUDA component has been brewing for four years. Customs officers are angry because Ottawa has broken a promise that an expansion of their duties to include Criminal Code enforcement responsibilities would come with a pay review.

Despite the fact that Customs managers have gotten big pay boosts and huge bonuses, front-line workers have gotten zip.
PSAC B.C. regional executive vice president Patty Ducharme, and CEUDA vice president Steve Pellerin-Fowlie were on hand at the protest to lend their support.

Workers say they’ll step up their fight against the government to win fair rates of pay.
